March is Wanderlust Month, the time of year I begin stealing glances at our luggage. As it is nearly May, my mind has long since crossed the Atlantic, my favorite direction to travel). Travel has always nestled in my thoughts; it flows through my veins. (I am probably 30% design, 20% food, 20% quiet narration and 30% travel.) At three years old, I think I lobbied for someone to teach me to read so I could begin learning other languages and planning my excursions.
Luckily, I fell in love with someone even more adventurous and curious than I. A few years ago, my husband and I considered taking at least 6 months to travel the world. We would have worked from our remote locations, so it would not have been all play, but this idea was promptly challenged by two sources. Stan's immediate supervisor, who telecommutes everyday from near and far, essentially responded by asking what he planned to do upon returning. (As we speak, the firm is "relocating" his division's offices - again - to make room for... other employees. The firm is highly respected for the quality of its work; you just won't see it on a certain Fortune list, unlike other comparable firms.) The second challenge was the real surprise. Our sweet seven-year-old dog was diagnosed with cancer, and we were told both the disease and its treatment would significantly decrease his lifespan, so we didn't want to miss much of the time we had left with him. Instead, we feed our travel craving with short trips, adding to the "adventures wall" of photos we're creating in the living room.
As I buzz with wanderlust, I look back with gratitude to the wonderful trips we have had the good fortune to enjoy together. That is the inspiration for the upcoming retrospective series on our travels to Paris, Seville, London, Istanbul, and Rome and Florence, about which I may add more here.
