I am fascinated by the evolution of personal style and the way it parallels life and the journey our personalities take. Hear me roar early 20's phase? - Modern minis with platform stilettos for a little rock-n-roll edge. Down? - Loose, minimal neutrals for comfort. Needing a creative escape? - Fanciful, girly, boho options from Anthropologie. Good momentum? - Confident, effortless yet structured JCrew casual-glam. Nesting? - a touch of Audrey Hepburn with happy Kate Spade color. Mid-life crisis? - back to modern minis with rock-it shoes... maybe with a pair of tights this time, at least in cold weather.
With me, this phenomenon works on a hyper, virtually caffeine-powered mode. I can go from one house of style to another based on mood from one day to the next. I don't like to limit myself strictly to one look or allow others to limit my expression with silly expectations and labels. Do I advocate wearing a ball gown to a picnic (though a ball gown-themed picnic would be gorgeous!) or jeans to a cocktail party? Nope. But don't be inhibited by those who scoff at non-conformity to their über-casual or conventional standards. Life is too short and there is too much creativity to enjoy!
The trouble is that this enthusiasm has spilled into home décor with indecisive effects. Here's the evolution of my décor style:
Junior/High School: roses, feminine things Georgian and Victorian, favorite color = blush
College: English woodland cottages, favorite color = green
Grad school: Spanish-Moroccan resort, favorite color = pops of it
Post-wedding: serene, beachy Swedish-country, favorite color = sage then pale blue
During interior design course: clean modern look with warm, natural tones, favorite color = pops of it
